Description

(click here to see curriculum links)

An exploration of the concepts of conservation of energy and energy transfers and changes, along with an introduction to different forms of energy. Includes at minimum: chemical energy from food, kinetic energy and forms of potential energy. We will also explore energy transformations including light, heat, chemical, electrical and sound and see how different forms of energy can be transferred from object to object and place to place.

Time

  • 90 minutes

Number of Students

  • 60

Year level

  • Yr 7 - 10

Requirements:

Access to electricity, access to water before and after the program, a cleared space for the students. Small amounts of smoke will be generated during some of the demonstrations - please do not site the table directly beneath a smoke alarm.

Australian Curriculum

This program was designed to support:

Sub-strand

Year 8

Year 9

Physical Sciences

Energy appears in different forms including movement (kinetic energy), heat and potential energy, and causes change within systems (ACSSU155)

Forms of energy can be transferred in a variety of ways through different mediums (ACSSU182)

Year 10

Energy conservation in a system can be explained by describing energy transfers and transformations (ACSSU190)

The motion of objects can be described and predicted using the laws of physics (ACSSU229)

Sub-strand

Year 9

Chemical Sciences

Chemical reactions, including combustion and the reactions of acids, are important in both non-living and living systems and involve energy transfer (ACSSU179)
