Young Astronomers - 30 students per program

resources

year level

An introduction to astronomy designed for students from Reception to Yr 2.  Use games, models, pictures, stories and dress-ups and drawing to provide an overview of our solar system, our place in space and an introduction to the concept of constellations. This program avoids the need for a planetarium, which can be expensive and often scary for younger children.

Bioinformatics, biotech and genetics

resources

year level

Using computer animations, models and discussion, this 90 minute presentation can serve as either an introduction to or revision for your genetics unit.  As well as covering gene transcription, protein formation and genetic diseases, it also looks at the importance of the humane genome project and the new science of bioinformatics.  The session ends with a group discussion on current ethical issues raised by the technology – a useful starting point for year 12 social issues essays. Any number of students per 90 minute session.
